You are looking at the hard work of rural Ethiopian smallholder farmers, the heartbeat of our local economies, and a massive opportunity to showcase our agricultural excellence on a larger stage. But translating that natural potential into sustainable, high-value market success requires something more: an uncompromising commitment to food safety, quality management, and modern farming techniques. That is exactly why our team at Mekan Quality Management and Training PLC recently headed to Arba Minch City. Contracted by Theday Agri Industry PLC, we designed and delivered an intensive, hands-on training. Our mission brought together 24 frontline Development Agents (DAs) and local horticulture experts working across the surrounding Weredas to master fruit production management, international quality standards, and rural leadership. Here is an inside look at how we are working together to build a more resilient agricultural sector from the ground up. Moving Beyond Theory: The Roadmap To make sure this training truly stuck, we threw out the dense textbooks and built an interactive curriculum fueled by real world case studies, team brainstorms, and energetic role plays. We focused heavily on four key value chains that define the region: Mango, Papaya, Banana, and Pineapple. 1: Mastering Fruit Production Management We started at the beginning of the crop lifecycle. Our training team guided participants through advanced methodologies in land preparation, professional nursery management, proper planting techniques, and tailored irrigation. We also dove into crucial maintenance steps like pruning and nutrient management, capped off by modern postharvest handling techniques to preserve fruit freshness right after clipping. 2: Implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) On the second, we introduced FAO aligned Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), which serve as the foundation for safe, sustainable farming. As documented in our standard training framework, "Introduction to Good Agricultural Practices," GAP is a comprehensive system built to minimize contamination risks while boosting a farm's economic viability and environmental health. We coached the cohort on: Smart Layouts & Zoning: Establishing clear 50-meter safety buffer zones between production fields and potential hazards like livestock pens or waste sites to prevent cross-contamination. Soil & Input Stewardship: Understanding specific soil preferences (loamy for mangoes, clay-loam for bananas, and sandy-loam for pineapples) and establishing strict pre-harvest interval rules to prevent harmful chemical residues. Water Management: Transitioning away from overhead sprinklers—which splash leaves and spread fungal diseases—and moving toward precision drip and furrow irrigation. Traceability & Record Keeping: Training participants to use detailed logs tracking planting dates, batch numbers, and chemical application dates. In the words of our manual, this ensures "one-step-forward and one-step-backward tracking," which is exactly what international buyers require for market compliance. 3: The Art of Rural Facilitation A technical concept is only useful if it can be easily understood by a farmer out in the field. On our final training, we focused entirely on extension delivery and adult learning methodologies. We put our trainees in the spotlight, using public speaking exercises and group facilitation role plays to build their confidence. This ensures they can step into rural settings and seamlessly pass these advanced skills down to thousands of local smallholders. Facing Real Field Challenges Together One of the most rewarding parts of this mission was listening to the frontline workers share the genuine, daily struggles faced by local farmers. Our interactive sessions uncovered several critical bottlenecks: • Severe Pest Pressures: Trainees shared that mango orchards in the area are facing devastating pest infestations, with fruit flies causing up to a staggering 60% crop loss before harvest. • Agrochemical Misuse: Due to limited technical oversight, some farmers are over applying fertilizers and pesticides, which unintentionally compromises soil health, crop safety, and sensitive local water bodies like Lake Abaya. • Infrastructure Gaps: Limited access to local soil testing kits and weak postharvest handling networks frequently leave farmers guessing about nutrient needs, leading to quality deterioration and preventable waste. These real world challenges underscore exactly why Mekan's technical presence is so necessary. By equipping extension workers with integrated pest management (IPM) strategies and sustainable soil techniques, we are helping the region shift away from reactive farming and move toward proactive, resilient agriculture. Real Data, Real Results We believe in measurable impact. To verify that genuine learning took place, we implemented a rigorous three level assessment model: checking pre training benchmarks, monitoring daily engagement, and concluding with a comprehensive post assessment. As detailed in the official performance metrics of our "Farmers Training report." the engagement was incredibly high, and the scores verified phenomenal knowledge growth. The Road Ahead While this Arba Minch training mission was a resounding success, our work doesn't stop when the seminar doors close. To ensure these achievements spark a long term agricultural evolution, the Mekan training team has outlined a strategic path forward: Continuous Mentoring & Coaching: Providing follow-up support to help our DAs confidently troubleshoot unique field challenges as they deploy these techniques across local villages. Peer-to-Peer Learning Networks: Building localized community networks so that trainees can continue solving problems collectively and sharing resources.
